In the News: Intimate Paradigm Shifts

Sometimes, it only takes one discovery to debunk a paradigm. In this case, the paradigm was one of the bedrock features of fashion history, which assumed that modern lingerie (panties, bras, etc.) were invented only recently and evolved out of the far more restrictive corsets. A cache of 15th century garments in an Austrian castle, however, has thoroughly debunked this story, bringing to light pieces more reminiscent of a bikini bottom than the long chemise usually portrayed as the mediaeval female undergarment of choice. This discovery is a unique reminder not only of the fact that there is always more to learn about history, but also that the lives of people so seemingly distant can, in fact, be startlingly recognisable.
